Microwave Magic: Microwave Rice

IMG_6513

My my memories of microwave rice have never been positive. In elementary school at the cafeteria they would serve these things called teriyaki bites. They were essentially pieces of ground beef (or maybe a mixture of meats) formed to look like nuggets and then dipped in a thick teriyaki glaze that masked any residual flavor in the meat. My friend and I thought these were pretty bomb at the time. Accompanying the teriyaki bites was a huge scoop of “rice”. I call it “rice” because even my third grade self and my friend knew that this is not how rice should taste. This white lump of starch was always gummy and you couldn’t even pick out a single grain of rice. I used to joke and call it mashed potato rice.

Another bad encounter with rice was when I tried the infamous Mr. Ben’s rice. That stuff is equally bad if not worse than the cafeteria rice. At least with the cafeteria rice, you don’t go in expecting much. But the picture on the outside of the Uncle Ben’s bag leads you to believe that in 5 minutes you’ll be eating some delicious hot n’ fluffy rice. In short, after these experiences I swore off microwavable rice…until now.

As it turns out, microwaveable rice can be good. The problem was before that the product wasn’t good and was prepackaged, but with the right ingredients you can have steaming hot good rice in 15 minutes. If you think about it, all a rice cooker does is heat up rice to a boil and then steams it. So why not do this in the microwave?

Rice Materials

For this project you’ll need a 1 1/2 cups of rice, 2 cups water, a microwaveable bowl (4 cup capacity min) and plastic wrap.

rinse rice

Start by washing the rice 3 times under cold water. Every time you rinse the rice the water should become a bit clearer.

Next pour the two cups of water and the rice in a microwaveable bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Use a fork to poke a couple holes on top.

Set the rice in the microwave for 9-10 minutes (depends on how strong your microwave is).

Once the rice is done, let it steam for another 5-10 minutes. Then uncover the rice and vĂ³ila your white rice is ready! Use a wet rice paddle to fluff the rice and serve immediately.

Microwaveable Bowl

Plastic Wrap

Directions:
